Several years ago my wife and I decided to plant an above ground vegetable garden. The concept is relatively simple. You build a box to hold your soil and organic materials, and then plant your seeds. The benefit of an above ground garden is that you don't have to dig up your yard and deal with rocks, roots, and poor soil.

We were excited to get started and made a list of everything we needed. Once the box was constructed, we layered in the manure, organic materials, and top soil. Finally, we laid out our vegetable rows and planted the seeds, topped with a light layer of planting straw, and watered. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Every morning as soon as it was light, I would run out to the garden to see what was growing. Every morning it was the same story, nothing. I was discouraged.

Starting a business from home to earn income online is a lot like planting a vegetable garden from seeds. You work like crazy to get from the idea stage to implementation. You create your business plan, design a website, find someone to host your blog, build an auto responder, write and track your ads, create content, etc. You are ready and anxious to make sales, and nothing happens. It is like your seeds have been planted and you are waiting for the seeds to grow. But it is not happening fast enough.

Like nature, "growing" a successful online business from your home requires an understanding of cycles. The first cycle is "startup" which is defined by frenzied activity that is new and exciting because you are taking a bold step towards securing you financial independence. The second cycle is the "planting" of your business where you are initiating the promotional campaign necessary to generate a list of prospects that can be converted to loyal customers. The third cycle is the "harvest" where you experience actual sales revenue and profit from your efforts.

The timing of these cycles is what I believe discourages many who start their own home based businesses with the best of intentions. For me, the startup cycle was fun, energizing, and exciting. I love to learn new things and this phase was pure joy. Same with the planting cycle; nothing but positive energy and anticipation. In the first 6 months of my online business venture, I brought in a total of $20. All that time, effort, and money for twenty bucks?! This is where my vegetable garden experience helped.

From the time that we planted the seeds in our new vegetable garden, it took 6 weeks of daily watering and plucking weeds before we saw the earliest signs of seed germination. From that point, it was another 6 weeks of watering, weeding, and pest control before the garden actually started to take on the look of a garden that was going to produce results. Four months into it, we started taking out fresh organic vegetables and putting them on the dinner table. The harvets cycle was very satisfying, but it took alot of patience and confidence that with the right effort, the vegetables would grow.

Back to the business - Most people who have not had the vegetable garden experience would have given up after making only twenty bucks after six months. Not me. I knew that the seeds had been planted, and I was diligently watering and weeding daily in the form of email marketing and content distribution to build my subscriber list. True, six months may seem like a long time to not generate revenue from your efforts, but it really isn't if you consider that the business can support you for the rest of your life. The patience and persistence paid off when the money came flowing in, just like tomatoes ripening on the vine.

Tax, Finance, CE, CPE, EA, CPA, CFP Blog: Reasonable Cause

Rossman v. United States, No. 1:11-cv-00139 (Ct. Fed. Cl. February 13, 2012)

Many practitioners will agree that the IRS is generally lenient in allowing the abatement of penalties for reasonable cause.  Reliance on a tax expert or IRS advice, irregularities in mail delivery, and death or serious illness are commonly deemed to be reasonable cause for a failure to file or pay taxes on time. Frequent Enrolled Agent jobs involve helping taxpayers obtain IRS penalty relief due to reasonable cause.  As Giovanni Rossman found out, however, a series of extension requests may vitiate reasonable cause even when there is emotional distress, financial difficulty, and misinformation provided by
a tax advisor. Giovanni’s mother died in August of 2005, and Giovanni was named executor of the estate. Prior to the due date of the estate tax return, an extension request was filed and granted, making the estate taxes due and payable on November 15, 2006. When the return was filed, Giovanni requested a second extension to pay the tax liability of over $800,000 so that she could secure loans with real estate and liquidate assets sufficient to pay the tax. An extension was granted until February 15, 2007. On February 14, 2007, she sought and was granted yet another extension to August 15, 2007. At no time did she make a request of the IRS for an installment payment agreement or seek advice about payment options, which are known by any tax professionals with EA training. By the last deadline, Giovanni had paid only $100,000 and the IRS began to assess penalties for failure to pay the balance. It was not until July of 2009 that Giovanni was able to pay the full amount due. By then, that amount included penalties of over $50,000. She then sought an abatement of the penalties on the basis of reasonable cause. Specifically, she argued that reasonable cause for the late payment existed due to: (1) the death of both of her parents in close proximity in time, making it emotionally difficult for her to handle the tax consequences of settling the estate, including obtaining financing and liquidating assets; (2) the existence of an “unprecedented credit crisis” that impeded the estate's ability to pay the estate tax; and (3) her accountant’s failure to give proper advice about the option of satisfying the estate tax liability through monthly payments. The Court of Federal Claims rejected Giovanni’s arguments, but not because the reasons cited did not constitute reasonable cause per se. Rather, it was because the estate sought and received extensions on three separate occasions. That fact, according to the court, indicates that neither the emotional distress of her situation nor the unfavorable market conditions initially prevented plaintiff from complying with the timing requirements. “With Giovanni’s already having demonstrated through her past actions the ability to meet the required standard of ‘ordinary business care and prudence’. . .  we are unable to conclude that those same, already known circumstances
(whether personal or economic) can later excuse the estate's failure to meet the extended payment deadline.”

Background

Any penalty imposed under the Internal Revenue Code can be abated by the IRS for reasonable cause. Reasonable cause is not comprehensively defined in the Code but has been generally held to mean that, despite the taxpayer’s responsible conduct, either there exist significant mitigating factors or events beyond his or her control caused the failure. Grounds similar to the ones offered by Giovanna have succeeded in other cases. For example, the Internal Revenue Manual itself recognizes that death or serious illness, or a death or serious illness in the taxpayer’s immediate family may constitute reasonable cause for failure to file a return on time or failure to deposit or pay a tax when due. Conversely, an Enrolled Agent study course cautions that emotional distresses related to things such as a divorce and custody battle, childcare responsibilities, and criminal charges have been rejected as reasonable cause. In many of these cases, as in Giovanni’s, the taxpayer’s ability to manage other obligations has defeated the use of illness or emotional distress as a basis for reasonable cause. A repeated pattern of failing to meet deadlines is also detrimental to a claim for reasonable cause. For example, an attorney who failed to file her tax returns on time argued that turmoil in her life as a result of her obligations as a sole practitioner and the illness (Alzheimer's disease and Parkinsonism) and death of her mother constituted reasonable cause. The court pointed out that she was able to conduct her law practice and a horse-breeding activity in spite of her personal difficulties. Further weakening her case was the fact that the failure was not isolated; her pattern of late filing was lengthy and consistent. On the other hand, reasonable cause was found to exist when the taxpayer's children were seriously ill with pneumonia and his wife was incapacitated with an emergency appendectomy. In another case, caring for a sick child and invalid parent, as well as job-related separation from her spouse causing marital discord was deemed sufficient reasonable cause. An evaluation is necessary of the factors in each situation. Just because an EA knows about penalty abatement from Enrolled Agent education doesn’t mean it is the right course of action to pursue for every taxpayer. Some courts have accepted financial difficulty as reasonable cause, and others have indicated that ignorance of the law or mere oversight may suffice. Each case is viewed on its own merits, and the particular facts and circumstances present can result in different degrees of success for taxpayers that appear to be similarly situated. While reliance on tax professionals is often a basis for reasonable cause, executors of estates are subject to a higher standard of vigilance with respect to filing and payment deadlines. In United States v. Boyle, 469 U.S. 241 (1985), an executor retained an attorney to prepare and file an estate tax return. Although the executor periodically contacted the attorney to monitor the attorney’s progress and was assured that he would be notified when the return was due, the return was ultimately filed three months late as a result of the attorney's error. The executor contended that a late filing penalty was unjustified because reliance on the attorney constituted reasonable cause. The Supreme Court rejected this argument, stating “it requires no special training or effort on the executor’s part to ascertain a deadline and ensure that it is met.” The court founded its conclusion on the notion that Congress has “charged the executor with an unambiguous, precisely defined duty to file the return within nine months” and has “placed the burden of prompt filing on the executor, not on some agent or employee of the executor.” Hence, estate executors relying upon professional assistance are still
responsible for assuring that tax practitioners meet deadlines. Finding a CPA specializing in tax matters or conducting an Enrolled Agent search are superior options.

Question:

Which statement below is correct with respect to abatement of penalties for reasonable cause?
  1. Reliance on tax professionals by the executor of an estate will always constitute reasonable cause
  2. Reasonable cause is determined on a case-by-case basis based on the facts and circumstances
  3. The IRS cannot abate penalties for reasonable cause
  4. Continuing to meet non-tax obligations will not be considered a factor in reasonable cause determinations

Answer: b

New Orleans Saints v Carolina PanthersGetty Images

Since he wasn?t being asked to rush the passer last season, Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan ballooned up to 300 pounds.

But now that he has a coach who trusts him, and needs him, a slimmed down Jordan is beginning to justify the first-round pick they spent on him.

?It?s awesome to be able to have the trust from the coaches to be able to do all these positions,? Jordan told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com.

Jordan might be the one qualified pass-rushing defensive lineman to truly fit into defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo?s system in New Orleans, and he?s getting plenty of chances.

Pigeonholed a year ago as a run-stopper only, and subbed out on third downs, Jordan bulked up.

?Halfway through the season, it was like, ?I?m going to be stuck in this role, I?m going to hit somebody in the mouth [on running plays],? Jordan said. ?I don?t need to worry about pass rush anymore. It was a bitter moment.?

But unlike former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Spagnuolo isn?t going to blitz as much, wanting to get all his pressure from his front four.

And he?s using the now-285-pound Jordan all along the front four to try to get some push, the way Spagnuolo used to use Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora in New York.

?Everyone has comparisons of what I could be or can do,? Jordan said. ?It?s more along the lines of, ?What do our coaches think I can do now???

He leads all NFL defensive linemen in tackle. That?s partly because the Saints can?t get off the field, allowing the fourth-most plays from scrimmage in the league. But he?s also been noticeable in his impact, something that wasn?t being said last year.

Tornado hits fair in Spain, flood deaths reach 10

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? A tornado swept through a fair ground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said Saturday.

The Friday tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.

Local media reported the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.

Just inland from the Mediterranean coastal town, five more victims of Friday's flash floods southwest of Gandia were found overnight. They included a middle-aged woman in the town of Lorca.

Last summer Lorca was hit by Spain's deadliest earthquakes in more than 50 years, leaving nine dead.

A spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia told The Associated Press on Saturday that the heavy downpours and resulting high waters had claimed the lives of five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and two in Malaga.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said that a 52-year-old British woman was missing in Almeria as well as one homeless man. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.

Local media reported that hundreds of citizens had to be evacuated throughout the region.

The flooding disrupted high-speed train service between Madrid and Valencia and various regional lines, while bridges and roads were also made impassible.

The heavy rains which started on Friday morning are expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the front moving north toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

(AP) ? Nearly 80 years after women at Swarthmore College voted to ban sororities because they were too exclusive, a group of female students will reinstate Greek life this spring after weathering months of polarizing debate on campus.

The future sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta pledge that members will be welcoming, diverse and dedicated to civic engagement and community service. The sorority will also provide valuable national networking opportunities, supporters say.

But some students at the liberal arts school near Philadelphia contend not much has changed since 1933. Sororities are still elite clubs, they say, and flout the college's Quaker roots emphasizing inclusion.

"It's just a really stupid system that shouldn't exist," senior Maya Marzouk said. "I think Swarthmore is better than that."

The highly selective college with about 1,500 students prides itself on rigorous academics, open dialogue and a commitment to social justice. It was co-founded in 1864 by Lucretia Mott, a prominent abolitionist and activist for women's rights.

Campus officials said they are simply facilitating the creation of a group that students want and that Title IX demands. The federal regulations require colleges to provide equal opportunities for men and women, and Swarthmore has two fraternities.

College senior Julia Melin said she helped to start Not Yet Sisters ? the group that will become Kappa Alpha Theta ? out of a sense that female students needed better mentoring and wider professional connections. Swarthmore's alumni association is relatively small, Melin noted.

Sorority critics "thought it was more about having a space to party in, and it's really not about that at all," said Melin, from nearby Abington, Pa. "It's about having a social support system during college and after college."

The Greek revival at Swarthmore appears to be unique, said Nicki Meneley, executive director of the National Panhellenic Conference. But she also noted that, as higher education enrollment has grown, sorority membership overall is at an all-time high: More than 300,000 undergraduates belong to chapters at about 665 campuses across the U.S. and Canada.

At Swarthmore, a Kappa Alpha Theta chapter originally established in 1891 was the first sorority on campus. Several other sororities followed, and by 1931 about 77 percent of the college's female students belonged to the Greek system, according to school archives.

Yet some groups discriminated against Jews. That led student Molly Yard ? who later became president of the National Organization for Women ? to campaign for a campus-wide female vote on abolishing sororities. It passed in 1933. (A male vote in 1951 to abolish fraternities was defeated.) This year, sorority opponents including Marzouk, a psychology major from Great Neck, N.Y., circulated a petition to demand a similar referendum; they say the student body had little input in the decision to revive the clubs. Heated discussions in campus news outlets have included suggestions to form a "women's union" instead, or even to ban Greek groups entirely.

But Title IX is the sorority's trump card, school officials said.

Liz Braun, the dean of students, noted Swarthmore has a written agreement with the national Kappa Alpha Theta organization to ensure the new chapter will uphold the college's founding principles of diversity and inclusivity. In this case, that includes allowing students who identify as female to join the sorority, regardless of their actual gender, Braun said.

"Each chapter takes on kind of its own flair ... based on the campus it's embedded in," she said.

That's partly why concerns about possible hazing and binge drinking have not been a large part of the conversation. Swarthmore is not considered a party school; Braun noted that Kappa Alpha Theta is dry and has a strict anti-hazing policy.

Also, the college's two fraternities are not residential, though they host events at rented houses on campus. About 6 percent of male students are affiliated with the groups.

Melin said about 30 to 40 students have expressed an interest in joining the sorority, which will have its first official intake in the spring. The group won't have on-campus housing, and leaders are still looking for dedicated meeting space.

The chapter's campus adviser, Satya Nelms, said she expects the controversy will eventually quiet down.

"I'm really confident that once the sorority is actually on campus, a lot of the concerns that people have ... will be eased," Nelms said.

A national spokeswoman for Kappa Alpha Theta said the organization is pleased to return to Swarthmore, but referred all other questions to the college.

(AP) ? Syrian authorities sent text messages over cell phones nationwide Thursday with a message for rebels fighting President Bashar Assad's regime: "Game over."

The messages signed by the Syrian Arab Army also urged the rebels to surrender their weapons and warned the countdown to evict foreign fighters has begun. The texts appear to be part of the regime's psychological battle against the rebels, but are highly unlikely to have any effect on fighters intent on toppling Assad.

Syrians say they began receiving the messages a day after rebels bombed a military command center in Damascus ? a major security breach of the heavily guarded capital that highlighted the regime's growing vulnerability in the face of a rebellion growing in confidence and capabilities.

People with cellular subscriptions received the messages while those with prepaid phones did not, residents in the Syrian capital said.

Syria's two cell phone providers are privately owned, and the government would presumably have to pay for the service. Government officials were not available for comment.

In August, Syrian army helicopters dropped leaflets warning rebels in Damascus to hand over their arms and seek amnesty.

Despite Wednesday's high-profile attack, the two sides have been locked in a stalemate after 18 months of conflict. Activists say the death toll since the uprising against Assad began in March last year has topped 30,000, with nearly two-thirds of the casualties reported in the past five months.

On Thursday, rebel fighters launched a new push to try to take control of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a major strategic prize in a stalemated civil war, opposition activists said.

Heavy clashes erupted Thursday in more than a dozen locations in the city, Syria's largest with 3 million people, said Mohammed Saeed, a local activist. Government forces shelled several districts, he said, speaking via Skype.

Rebels also attacked a compound of Syria's political security department in the city, said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group of activists.

Opposition fighters took control of several neighborhoods in the city two months ago. Since then, neither has been able to dislodge the other.

In Geneva on Thursday, the United Nations' refugee agency said the U.N. and its partners are launching a revised appeal for $487.9 million to help support Syrian refugees. It said 2,000 to 3,000 refugees are crossing into neighboring countries each day.

The UNHCR said 294,000 Syrian refugees are registered or awaiting registration in neighboring countries.

Earlier Thursday, Lebanese TV station Al-Manar broadcast footage showing Syrian government troops driving rebels from a building they had briefly occupied Wednesday after a double car bomb attack struck army headquarters in Damascus.

The attacks further demonstrated the rebels' ability to penetrate the tight security in the capital.

Al Manar's correspondent Youssef Shaeito said he accompanied Syrian troops on Wednesday as they stormed the compound after the explosions. In an interview with the station, he said he saw the bodies of three gunmen inside, suggesting clashes between government forces and rebels inside the building.

The station is owned by the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group, a strong ally of Assad's regime. Syrian state-run media, however, reported only on the car bombs, omitting any mention of clashes inside the building.

Exclusive Al Manar footage showed a group of soldiers surrounding a building at the compound and shooting at targets inside. Shortly afterward, a pickup truck with a heavy machine gun mounted on it joins the battle.

Eventually, dozens of troops are seen storming the building and going up the stairs from one room to the other amid smoke. The bodies of three gunmen are seen on the floor, one with an apparent suicide belt tied around his waist.

Shaeito said that in the mayhem following the explosions, gunmen had infiltrated the army command headquarters, taken up positions and begun shooting at soldiers. He said the gunmen "moved from floor to floor and room to room" and tossed grenades at soldiers outside.

He said it took soldiers about 45 minutes to storm the building.

International diplomacy has failed to stop the bloodshed in Syria. Syrian activists said more than 305 people were killed across Syria on Wednesday, making it one of the deadliest days since the conflict began.

They included at least 40 people whose bodies were discovered in a suburb of Damascus, some of whom appeared to have been killed execution-style. The exact circumstances in which the victims were killed remain unclear because of strict restrictions on the media.

You can use affiliate marketing to generate extra revenue for your online business. However, in order to be successful you need to be aware of certain information. This article will share techniques and information that other affiliate marketers have found effective.

Having an accountant is important when starting a business. This does not have to actually be a person, as many accountant programs do exist. Some accounting knowledge is beneficial so that you know companies are paying you properly. Set up your accounting before you start, be ready.

If you want true results from affiliate marketing, keep only the highest profit affiliates and kill off the rest. Make sure to review your affiliates to see their performance. As you remove your low-performing affiliates, you will be able to set the stage for more advertisers that can help you make money.

Always try to come across as a legitimate business in your affiliate marketing campaign. Do not attack your visitors with obnoxious links. Your customers should view you as the seller of the products offered on your site.

Only promote a product that you personally know is good. Your product recommendations have a reflection on your business and you. Your customers build confidence and trust in your company based on the products that you promote. Offering good deals on quality products is the way to satisfy customers and convince them to do repeat business.

If you want to be successful at affiliate marketing, know your audience. If you intend on keeping readers, you must provide them with the information they need. Take a look at why they visit your site. What is drawing them to you?

When you are monitoring your statistics, be sure to take note of where your link does well with regards to its position in your article. Move it around the page and see how it does at the top of an article, in the middle or at the bottom. Be sure to use the same text for this test, and only change the link position within your article.

Remember that a few sound tips from proven sources will always serve you better than a million unproven tips you might read about. You must invest time and not expect any returns at first. Only reading and never acting is simply a diversionary tactic and it needs to be broken before you lose out on a valuable opportunity. Choose a couple of good, workable tips and put them to work.

Try using a deadline for when an affiliate product can be purchased. A deadline puts a little pressure on would-be customers, giving some of them the gentle prod they need to make a decision and buy. This is an excellent method to raise your sales.

One terrific way to promote your products is to run a giveaway or contest. Rewards like this may not only translate into repeat business, but may promote your business by word of mouth referrals.

Go to forums and message boards to share your knowledge on strategy. Seek help for any questions you may have by joining an affiliate group or forum. Her you can brainstorm about graphics, new affiliate programs, code ideas, and more.

Make sure you know what kind of kick back you are going to get before you go with an affiliate. Is it possible to keep track of affiliate-driven purchases as well as orders placed by phone, mail, and fax? You must ensure that every sale that you make is properly credited to you.

The aforementioned advice should give you the edge when it comes to affiliate marketing. However, don?t stop reading now because new marketing techniques are made public every single day. Have affiliates sell your products for you, to generate additional revenue for you besides your direct product sales income. You will achieve multiple objectives this way. ?

Dean Foods says exploring Morningstar sale

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dean Foods Co confirmed on Wednesday that it is weighing a sale of its Morningstar division, in a deal that could be worth more than $1 billion and lead to a break-up of the largest dairy company in the United States.

The company said it recently decided to explore a transaction for Morningstar, the smallest of its three segments, as part of its goal to maximize shareholder value, confirming a Reuters report earlier on Wednesday that cited unnamed sources.

The company's stock closed up 5.5 percent on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday and was up 81 percent from a year ago.

"We have not yet identified a buyer for Morningstar, but we know this business possesses an attractive portfolio in a growing marketplace and a top-notch management team," Dean said in a statement.

"That said, we will only sell this business if we can do so in a transaction that maximizes shareholder value and ensures the future success of the business," the company added.

The company has hired investment bank Evercore Partners Inc to shop the business to potential buyers and has attracted interest mostly from private equity firms, people familiar with the matter said before the company made its announcement. The sale could fetch more than $1 billion, the people said.

Evercore did not respond to requests for comment.

A separation of Dean Foods would come after similar moves by Fortune Brands and Sara Lee. Kraft Foods Inc will spin off its North American grocery business next week and change its name to Mondelez International.

BREAKING UP

Given last month's announcement that Dean is spinning off its WhiteWave segment, Wednesday's news was not surprising, Stephens Inc analyst Farha Aslam said.

"Dean as a company is right now exploring strategic alternatives to unlock value. So the fact that they're exploring this opportunity makes sense to us," Aslam said, calling Morningstar an attractive business. "It has very solid cash flow."

Dean said it planned to sell 20 percent of WhiteWave in an initial public offering expected to raise some $300 million, and then distribute the rest to shareholders. It plans to use proceeds of the IPO to reduce debt.

Morningstar sells Friendship cottage cheese and private label dairy products such as creamers, ice cream mix and sour cream. It supplies a range of foodservice customers such as restaurant chains.

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Christopher Growe said it was "curious" that Dean is looking to sell Morningstar now, since milk and butterfat prices are expected to rise in the future, which could hurt the unit's profits.

"The company may find it difficult to find a buyer or achieve the level of proceeds commensurate with creating shareholder value," Growe said in a research note.

Growe said possible suitors could include private equity firms, dairy cooperatives, such as the Dairy Farmers of America, and strategic buyers such as H.P. Hood.

An industry banker, who declined to be identified by name, mentioned Treehouse Foods and Michael Foods as possible suitors.

H.P. Hood and Michael Foods declined to comment. Treehouse and Dairy Farmers of America were not immediately available.

Morningstar had net sales of $1.3 billion in 2011, making up 10 percent of Dean's overall sales of $13.1 billion. The company's debt-to-earnings ratio was 4.64 at the end of 2011, down from 5.13.

Following a sale of Morningstar and the spin-off of WhiteWave, Dean would be left with its Fresh Dairy Direct business. That is its largest business, with annual sales of $9.6 billion, but it is the most challenged, since selling milk is a low-margin business.

Costs are dependent on a range of volatile commodities from fuel to dairy and passing on those costs to consumers is not easy, since there is little brand loyalty and consumers often choose the cheapest brand.

In 2011, the company took a $1.9 billion charge to write down goodwill in the dairy business, which it had built up through acquisitions over the years. Falling demand and prices over several years had hurt the value of that business.

Dean shares closed up 84 cents, or 5.5 percent, at $16.23 on Wednesday.

Holy Crap, Self-Driving Cars Are Now Legal in California

Holy Crap, Self-Driving Cars Are Now Legal in CaliforniaJust moments ago, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into effect SB1298, effectively paving the way for driverless cars in California. For a state that relies more heavily on cars than any other, this is hugely significant when it comes to traffic and road congestion.

"Today we're looking at science-fiction becoming tomorrow's reality," said the governor. And tomorrow isn't that far off. According to Google's Sergey Brin, "You can count on one hand the number of years until ordinary people can experience this." More and more Google employees will be beta-testing it starting this year, and when you hear the potential advantages, you'll start to wish you worked there.

Brin envisions the driverless-cars serving people who couldn't drive under normal circumstances. "There are many, many people who are underserved by our transportation today," he said. "The blind... some people are too young, some people are too old, sometimes we're too intoxicated." But beyond opening the doors to people who might otherwise be cut off from transportation, it's something the masses may quickly get spoiled by.

Another area where Brin hopes the driverless-car will improve society is traffic:

"Why does the congestion happen to begin with? The fact is that on a normally operating highway, cars take up a very small fraction of the space. Mostly it's just air between you the the car in front of you, to the sides of you, and so forth. Self-driving cars can actually 'chain together' and use the highways more efficiently, potentially eradicating congestion."

It's hard not to have a visceral, gut-clinching reaction when you picture a string of cars speeding down the highway like cyclists drafting each other in a race. But then driverless cars aren't designed to speed, and according to Brin, "Driverless cars don't run red lights." That's a bold statement, but there would be a lot fewer auto fatalities if it's true. Google's engineering team is busy trying to account for every anomaly.

The cars could make us more productive, allowing us to get some work done while we're stuck in traffic. They could also potentially solve a lot of our parking problems. A driverless car could theoretically drop you off and then go find a efficient place to park itself. Or, if you didn't need have to own your car, it could drop you off, then be used by someone else, eliminating the need for parking all together.

By Brin's admission, the list of technical details yet to be solved make for a very long list, but Google's driverless cars have already traveled over 300,000 of miles without incident. With the passage of SB1298 today, the door is now open to increasing the amount of road-testing by a significant margin, which will make these cars available to everyone much sooner. We can't wait for that day. [Google]

Causes, Symptoms And Treatment Of Hodgkin's Disease - Ayushveda

VN:D [1.9.20_1166]

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Hodgkin's Disease causesHodgkin?s disease is cancer of lymphatic tissue that is generally found not only in lymph nodes and spleen, but also in bone marrow, liver and other places. Specifically speaking, the cancer originates in the cells of lymphatic tissue called lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells.

Nowadays Hodgkin?s disease is also referred to as Hodgkin?s lymphoma.? With early recognition and adequate treatment, the 5-year survival rate is quite high (almost 80%). Since many of the people suffering from Hodgkin?s are young, if adequately treated they can survive for 40 or more years after treatment.

Causes Of Hodgkin?s Disease

The exact cause is not known, but it is thought to be due to many factors. It is more common in males, those between 15 to 40 years and those over 55 years. If there is a family history of Hodgkin?s, you are at greater risk for the disease.

If you have a history of Epstein-Barr virus infection causing infectious mononucleosis, you are at increased risk for Hodgkin?s. If the immune system has been weakened due to infections such as HIV you are more likely to develop the disease. However, many people with one or more risk factors do not go on to develop the disease.

Symptoms

There is usually painless swelling of lymph nodes in the armpits, neck or groin. If liver or spleen is enlarged, you can have a feeling of fullness and pain in the upper abdomen just beneath the ribs. You may suffer weight loss without any apparent reason. You may have frequent and persistent fever.

symptoms of hodgkin's disease

There can be other symptoms like weakness, tiredness, trouble with breathing, coughing, chest pain, night sweats and itchy skin. There can also be back pain, red patches on skin, tendency to bleed easily and petechiae (purple or red spots on skin). These symptoms need not always indicate cancer, but if they are present for 2 or more weeks, then you should think of consulting a doctor.

Diagnosis

Biopsy of swollen lymph nodes and biopsy of bone marrow are done. If the disease is confirmed, then other tests are done to find the extent of spread so that the disease can be assigned a stage, which helps in planning the treatment. These tests are blood tests, liver and kidney function tests, CT scan of chest and abdomen, and PET scan.

Staging of Hodgkin?s Disease

The staging is done with one or more of these tests: CT scan, MRI, PET scan and biopsies of bone marrow, lymph nodes and liver. Staging is based on the extent of involvement of lymph nodes and other organs like liver, spleen, lung and bone. The stages run from I to IV including also the category of ?recurrent? to account for recurrence of disease after treatment.

Treatment

Treatment depends on age, presence of symptoms like weight loss, night sweats and fevers, and type, stage and size of the tumor. The treatment is with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or both. If there is relapse after treatment, higher doses of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or both, are given, followed with stem cells transplantation.

There are three chemotherapy regimens currently used, namely ABVD, Stanford V and BEACOPP regimens, each of which uses a combination of different chemotherapeutic drugs. Radiotherapy used is mainly external beam radiotherapy.

Could Castration Help Men Live Longer?

Call it making the best of a potentially bad situation. Eunuchs -- castrated men -- live nearly 20 years longer than other men, a new study has found.

The study of over 80 eunuchs from the Chosun Dynasty, which ruled in Korea from 1392 to 1897, looked at the world's only known record of eunuchs' lives and compared them to genealogical records of other men of similar social rank. The researchers cross-checked their results with other royal records.

They found that the average lifespan of a Korean eunuch was about 70 years, 14 to 19 years higher than non-castrated men of similar social standing.

Three of the 81 eunuchs lived to be over 100 years old. The researchers calculated that the rate of centenarians among this group of eunuchs was at least 130 times higher than the current rate in developed countries.

"Our study supports the idea that male sex hormones decrease the lifespan of men," wrote Kyung-Jin Min, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Inha University in Inchon, South Korea, and lead author of the study published today in the journal Current Biology.

This study does not prove that castration directly increases human longevity, said S. Jay Olshansky, a professor of public health at the University of Illinois in Chicago, who studies longevity but was not involved with the study. "It may not have anything to do with being eunuchs," he said, adding that this study did not adjust for lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, and stress.

TED Scientist Discovers Secret to Longer Life Watch Video TechBytes: iPhone Portability; Wi-Fi Scarce on Flights Watch Video

Previous studies have shown that castration -- which removes the source of male sex hormones -- increases lifespan in animals. But studies in humans haven't been conclusive. One past study found that castrati singers did not live significantly longer than non-castrated singers. Another study has shown that castration increased longevity by 14 years in mentally disabled, institutionalized men. That increase in lifespan is similar to the findings in the Korean eunuch study.

Women reach the age of 110 ten times more often than men, said Dr. L. Stephen Coles, a co-founder of the Los Angeles Gerontology Research Group, who was not involved with the study. In a research group of 67 confirmed centenarians, he said, only three are men.

There may be several reasons for a sex difference in lifespan, experts said.

Females may have an advantage in longevity because they have a back-up X chromosome, Coles said. A women's body is a mixture of cells, half containing an active X chromosome from her mother and the other half from her father, he said. If there is a defect on one X chromosome, half of her cells will be unaffected.

Male sex hormones may have a negative effect on the immune system, wrote study author Min in the paper. "Male sex hormones also predispose men to adverse cardiovascular attacks."

While research seems to link male sex hormones to shorter life spans, experts remind us that quality of life matters more than quantity.

"I would not recommend becoming a eunuch," Coles said, "Or taking drugs to reduce your sex hormones." Reducing testosterone levels in men or women would severely affect one's sex drive, he said.

The findings that the absence of male sex hormones may improve longevity runs counter to a growing trend in the anti-aging industry, Olshansky said.

Some companies claim a healthier longer life can be enhanced by the introduction of growth or sex hormones at levels that existed when you were younger, he said.

Dating: Rejected By Her | Better After 50

I realize that the odds of her calling or emailing me are slightly less than the odds of Mitt Romney standing in line to buy an Extra Value Meal. And yet I can?t go two hours without thinking about her. Every morning, I run to the computer hoping there will be a message from her. Every time the phone rings, I imagine it?s going to be her voice on the other end of the line.

But it isn?t. And it won?t be. She stopped returning messages many months ago. I really thought she was the love of my post-divorce life, but as it turns out, I was just the like of hers. I want to say that I?ve been able to get over that pain of having my heart discarded by someone I cared about, but the truth is, I still haven?t. Trust me, I know that breakups happen all the time. Still, there is something about romantic rejection after divorce that seems to carry an extra sting that I never anticipated.

I?d had my heart broken plenty of times before I got married. For every sad split, though, I was young and/or foolish enough to figure that there would be another house party or bar night next week where I could start the process over again. When I was single and in my 20s, whether I was bailing on somebody or she was bailing on me, rejection was a plus in some ways. First, it was like a spiritual reset button, allowing you to enjoy the endless possibilities of singlehood. And second, learning to lose is simply good training for later in life.

It?s all about trial and error; the trials are more fun, while the errors are less serious. Then you get married, and rejection takes on an entirely different, and much less redeeming, meaning. The whole rationale behind committing yourself to matrimony is that you?ll never have to be shot down by a potential partner again. You agree to that whole ??till death do us part? thing, which allows you to worry about kids, mortgages and choosing between satellite and cable TV services rather than who you?ll be breaking up with next.

Then, for 50 percent of us, divorce comes along. It doesn?t matter whether you?re instigating the end of the marriage or the one on the receiving end. This Super Bowl of all rejections erases any illusion of comfort when you start dating again. It?s like being in a car accident. You get back behind the wheel to drive again, but you always remember that sick feeling of impact and flinch just a little whenever you?re driving in traffic.

It?s hard not to feel a little bit wary after going all in on a relationship post-divorce. Not only have you experienced the biggest breakup of your life, you?re also most likely at an age where finding a second serious partner is much more difficult. Even with all the single soccer moms and weekend dads out there now, the pickings are still slimmer than they were when you were younger. That puts more pressure on ensuring that any relationship you do get involved in works out. Which, in turn, makes you feel like even more of a schmo when rejection happens.

And I?ve had that feeling plenty of times these past few years. There were the dozens of unreturned Match.com messages, the calls from the ones who did get back to me that ended with them saying ?I?ll check my schedule and get back to you,? the set-up dates who allowed me to buy them a few dinners and get a couple of front-seat make-out sessions in before ignoring my calls, the artist I saw for a couple of months until she texted her breakup.

I?m sure there were reasons for my various dismissals, at least half of which are probably valid. I could have been too short, too old, too obsessed with the Boston Red Sox, too consumed with my own jokes ? I?ll never really know, although maybe that?s for the best. At least I know why I rejected all the women who were interested in me, even if I never expressed that reason at the end of every coffee meet-up where I was more attracted to my iced latte than to the woman I was with, and every set-up date with a sweet but laughter-challenged companion.

It was because of her, the aforementioned woman who became everything to me. For a little while anyway. She had all the qualities that allowed me stop to worrying about the sadness that comes with divorce: beauty, humor, intelligence, style and an interest in me. And now all I have left is the vision problem she left me with: All I see when looking at other women is her. Or, rather, all the qualities that aren?t her.

I realize that I shouldn?t be taking the rejection so seriously. It just happens sometimes. And no matter who or what caused your divorce, the end result is that it should be viewed as liberation rather than punishment. It?s the chance to have some later-in-life freedom that your married friends no doubt envy and a time to explore many relationships rather than quickly settling back into another one.

Besides, while rejection does suck, you can?t feel the hurt if you didn?t feel an attraction first. Feeling that connection for somebody new is the best sign that you?re moving on with your life. I?m trying to move forward. For the first time in a year, I had a second date with someone and am actually looking forward to a third. (Which, I realize, could be setting me up for more memories of her and, ultimately, more rejection.)

Still, I?m going to use G. Gordon Liddy as my romantic guidance counselor. To prove his toughness, Liddy would apparently hold his hand over a candle until his palm burned. When asked if his stunt hurt, he?d say ?Yes, but the trick was to not mind the pain.? That is the perfect dating advice for anyone as consumed with rejection as I am. Sure, being on either end of getting dumped feels extra lousy when you?re still coping with the impact of divorce. The trick is not minding it.
