Former CEO of Progress Energy Florida Jeff Lyash resigns from Duke Energy

By Ivan Penn, Times Staff Writer
Ivan PennTampa Bay Times Posted: Dec 18, 2012 02:49 PM

Progress Energy's merger with Duke Energy has resulted in the departure of another senior executive, the utility announced this week.

Jeff Lyash, the former president and chief executive officer of Progress Energy Florida, announced his resignation as executive vice president of energy supply for the merged company.

Lyash's departure is effective Dec. 31. His responsibilities will be divided between two current executives.

Lyash, who ran Progress' Florida operations from 2006 to 2009, joins a growing list of Progress executives who have left or plan to leave following the company's July 2 merger with Duke Energy. His total compensation last year was $2.3 million.

A major proponent of nuclear power, Lyash has played a key role in the proposed construction of two new reactors in Levy County. His departure will not affect Duke Energy's decision about building the Levy nuclear plant or whether to repair the broken Crystal River nuclear plant in Citrus County, a utility spokesman said.

"His decision to leave was his decision," said Dave Scanzoni, Duke spokesman. "That has no relation to operations in Florida or anywhere else."

Lyash's Florida successor, Vincent Dolan, also is leaving the company by the end of the year. Alexander "Alex" Glenn will replace Dolan as the president and chief executive officer of Progress Energy Florida.

The departures began with the firing of Bill Johnson, the head of all of Progress Energy's operations in the Carolinas and Florida.

Johnson was slated to run the new combined company but was fired the same day he took the job. The Duke Energy board cited a lack of confidence in Johnson, in part because of the handling of nuclear operations in Florida and the broken Crystal River plant in particular.

With Johnson's departure came resignations from Progress' chief administrative officer, Mark Mulhern, and the company's chief integration and innovation officer, Paula Sims.

As the dust slowly settles on the executive changes, Duke Energy continues to focus on bringing the two companies together.

On April 29, Progress Energy Florida will become Duke Energy Florida. At that time, the company plans to roll out its new logo design on signs, buildings and vehicles. That process is expected to take several months.

Bugs in the Christmas tree

Dec. 18, 2012 ? Your Christmas tree may be adorned with lights and glitter. But 25,000 insects, mites, and spiders are sound asleep inside the tree.

"There are a number of insects hiding in a Christmas tree," says Associate Professor Bjarte Jordal at the University Museum of Bergen, who goes on to list springtails, bark lice, mites, moths and the odd spider as the creeps most likely to be dragged into the average household come Christmas time.

Jordal is an expert on insects.

"In research on Christmas trees there have been found as many as 25,000 individual creep in some of the trees", Jordal explains. "If you pound the tree on a white cloth before you throw it out after Christmas, you will discover quite a number of small bugs."

How do these creeps end up in the Christmas tree?

"They go to sleep for the winter, or hibernate to use the technical term. They usually empty their bodies of fluids and produce a chilled liquid and are completely inactive. But they reawaken when the tree is brought into the heat of the living room. It?s all down to stimulus. Upon feeling the heat and awakened by the light, they believe that springtime has arrived and spring back to life."

So do they go about wandering around the living room or what?

"No, I believe they stay in the tree. Both the Christmas tree and the house itself will be very dry. Also, most insects don?t live off the tree, only in it. As they cannot feed on the limited plants found in most households, the bugs will quickly dry out and die. These insects and bugs do not constitute any risk or danger to people or furniture. And if anyone is worried about allergic reactions, I don?t think there?s any danger of that. But obviously, should there be an extreme number of mites in a tree people with severe allergies may react to this."

Are there a fixed number of bugs in each and every Christmas tree?

"This varies a lot. Some of it is down to pure coincidence and some of it is down to what type of tree it is. Trees chopped in your own backwoods will contain more bugs than firs and other trees that have been farmed for use as Christmas trees will contain fewer creeps. There is particularly much in Norwegian Pine, whereas Juniper shrub has a fauna of its own."

Can you spot the little beasts on the tree?

"No, they are good at hiding and are invisible to the human eye, although one certainly should be able to spot the odd spider. To get a proper look, you will have to get out a clean, white sheet and shake the tree."

What about the tabloid media?s favourite arachnids ? the ticks? Can they be found in our Christmas trees as well?

"There may very well be, and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health has actually looked into this. Their research suggests that there are three reports every Christmas in Norway of ticks found in Christmas trees. What usually happens is that the family dog has gone to rest under the tree and has incurred ticks. But the overall chances of tick bites are minimal. Also, the dog need not be allowed to rest under the tree. And the ticks are usually in sleep mode when the tree is brought into the house and dead by the time the tree leaves the house after Christmas. So, as I said, the risk is minimal."

But even if there is seemingly little danger or nuisance to expect from these creepy-crawlies, what should people be conscious of to minimise the number of bugs in the Christmas tree?

"I would recommend that you get a locally grown hardwood tree, as this is most likely to have a limited fauna. But you should by no means clean or flush the tree free of bugs, as this will damage the tree. Anyway, there is nothing to fear. You need to take into consideration that there are plenty of insects and bugs in potted plants that are regular features in most households. As we all know, these attract plenty of flies. It?s no different with Christmas trees."

Do you think that people are aware that the Christmas tree they bring into the house is full of little bugs?

"Probably not. After all, these little bugs are invisible to the human eye. I believe there is a trend in people not being particularly knowledgeable about nature. But when you bring a tree into the comfort of your living room, the tree carries a part of nature with it. Yet at the same time people tend to remove themselves more and more from nature."

Even the smallest stroke can damage brain tissue and impair cognitive function

Monday, December 17, 2012

Blocking a single tiny blood vessel in the brain can harm neural tissue and even alter behavior, a new study from the University of California, San Diego has shown. But these consequences can be mitigated by a drug already in use, suggesting treatment that could slow the progress of dementia associated with cumulative damage to miniscule blood vessels that feed brain cells. The team reports their results in the December 16 advance online edition of Nature Neuroscience.

"The brain is incredibly dense with vasculature. It was surprising that blocking one small vessel could have a discernable impact on the behavior of a rat," said Andy Y. Shih, lead author of the paper who completed this work as a postdoctoral fellow in physics at UC San Diego. Shih is now an assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Working with rats, Shih and colleagues used laser light to clot blood at precise points within small blood vessels that dive from the surface of the brain to penetrate neural tissue. When they looked at the brains up to a week later, they saw tiny holes reminiscent of the widespread damage often seen when the brains of patients with dementia are examined as a part of an autopsy.

These micro-lesions are too small to be detected with conventional MRI scans, which have a resolution of about a millimeter. Nearly two dozen of these small vessels enter the brain from a square millimeter area of the surface of the brain.

"It's controversial whether that sort of damage has consequences, although the tide of evidence has been growing as human diagnostics improve," said David Kleinfeld, professor of physics and neurobiology, who leads the research group.

To see whether such minute damage could change behavior, the scientists trained thirsty rats to leap from one platform to another in the dark to get water.

The rats readily jump if they can reach the second platform with a paw or their snout, or stretch farther to touch it with their whiskers. Many rats can be trained to rely on a single whisker if the others are clipped, but if they can't feel the far platform, they won't budge.

"The whiskers line up in rows and each one is linked to a specific spot in the brain," Shih said. "By training them to use just one whisker, we were able to distill a behavior down to a very small part of the brain."

When Shih blocked single microvessels feeding a column of brain cells that respond to signals from the remaining whisker, the rats still crossed to the far platform when the gap was small. But when it widened beyond the reach of their snouts, they quit.

The FDA-approved drug memantine, prescribed to slow one aspect of memory decline associated with Alzheimer's disease, ameliorated these effects. Rats that received the drug jumped whisker-wide gaps, and their brains showed fewer signs of damage.

"This data shows us, for the first time, that even a tiny stroke can lead to disability," said Patrick D. Lyden, a co-author of the study and chair of the department of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. "I am afraid that tiny strokes in our patients contribute?over the long term?to illness such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease," he said, adding that "better tools will be required to tell whether human patients suffer memory effects from the smallest strokes."

"We used powerful tools from biological physics, many developed in Kleinfeld's laboratory at UC San Diego, to link stroke to dementia on the unprecedented small scale of single vessels and cells," Shih said. "At my new position at MUSC, I plan to work on ways to improve the detection of micro-lesions in human patients with MRI. This way clinicians may be able to diagnose and treat dementia earlier." --Susan Brown

Japan's deadlock over? A supermajority emerges in exit polls.

Japan?s main conservative party pulled off a major victory in Sunday?s election, giving its leader,?Shinzo Abe, a mandate to push for big public spending and a hawkish foreign policy.

By Justin McCurry,?Correspondent / December 16, 2012

Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) leader and former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe smiles, at the LDP headquarters in Tokyo December 16. LDP surged back to power in an election on Sunday just three years after a devastating defeat, giving Abe a chance to push his hawkish security agenda and radical economic recipe.

The result marked a dramatic comeback for Abe?s Liberal Democratic party (LDP), just three years after it was ousted in a landslide win for the left-of-center?Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ).

Exit polls indicated the?LDP?was on course to win around 300 seats, and its traditional ally, New?Komeito, about 30 seats. Combined, that would secure them a two-thirds majority in the 480-seat lower house, enabling them to override attempts to block legislation by the upper house, where no single party has overall control.

That ?supermajority? would end the policy deadlock that has restrained Japan for the past five years, as it attempts to end two decades of economic stagnation and address ballooning welfare and pension bills.

Abe to focus on economy

Abe, 58, who resigned as prime minister in 2007 amid ill health and scandals involving his cabinet ministers, signaled?he would make the economy his priority. "First and foremost we have to bring about an economic recovery and pull Japan out of deflation," he said on TV after his party?s victory was assured.

The current prime minister,?Yoshihiko?Noda, whose?DPJ?is expected to win just 65 seats ? about a fifth of the number it won in 2009 ? said he would resign as party leader to take responsibility for its heavy defeat.

"The result reflects a public assessment of our three years and three months in power,??Goshi?Hosono, the DPJ?s policy chief, said in a TV interview. "The party leadership, including myself, must take responsibility for that.?

Koichi?Nakano, a political science professor at Sophia University in Tokyo, says the?LDP?had benefited from public anger over the DPJ?s broken promises.

?The DPJ?s slogan three years ago was putting people?s livelihoods first, but then?Noda?increased the consumption tax, and that was seen by voters as a fundamental betrayal,??Nakano?says. ?The Japanese electorate is consistent in punishing the governing party if it feels it has been lied to.?

Shigeru?Ishiba, the LDP?s general secretary, said the new administration?s work would begin immediately. ?This is a tremendous result, but we have a whole host of issues confronting us, including the economy and national security. The people have expectations of us, and we have to respond to them quickly."

(AP) ? Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has had a stroke and his medical team in Baghdad is still trying to stabilize his condition, a spokesman for the prime minister said Tuesday.

Talabani, a rare unifying figure who is seen to rise above the country's ethnic and sectarian fault lines, has been actively involved in trying to mediate an ongoing crisis between Iraq's central government and the country's Kurdish minority.

The spokesman, Ali al-Moussawi, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is at the hospital where the president is being treated.

Doctors have not decided whether Talabani will continue to be treated in Baghdad or will be flown to another country for treatment, he said. He was unable to provide further details.

Talabani's office earlier said the Iraqi president had been rushed to the hospital after showing signs of fatigue on Monday evening, and that he was being treated for an unspecified health problem.

Talabani's spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

An Iraqi Cabinet official said Talabani fainted Monday and remains unconscious. The official agreed to speak only on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release details about the president's health.

The Iraqi presidency is seen as a largely ceremonial post, though it does retain some powers under Iraq's constitution. The president must sign off on laws approved by parliament and has the power to block executions.

Talabani, a member of Iraq's Kurdish minority, has frequently used the post to mediate disputes within the government and among Iraq's various sects and ethnic groups.

He has recently been working to resolve a standoff between the central government and the Kurds, who have their own fighting force.

The two sides last month moved additional troops into disputed areas along the Kurds' self-rule northern region, prompting fears that fighting could break out.

Talabani last week brokered a deal that calls on both sides to eventually withdraw troops from the contested areas, though there is no timetable for how soon the drawdown might take place.

Talabani met with al-Maliki earlier Monday. They agreed that al-Maliki would invite a delegation from the Kurdish regional government to Baghdad to continue the talks, according to the prime minister's office.

Bose SoundDock III embraces Lightning-equipped iPhones and iPods for $250

Bose SoundDock III rides the Lightningequipped iPhone or iPod for $250

The last significant upgrade to Bose's core SoundDock model was seemingly eons ago -- distant enough in time that the iPod classic still showed up in press images. We might be thankful, then, that the arrival of the Lightning connector has prompted the arguably overdue SoundDock III. As you'd expect, the primary (and really, only) change to the speaker dock is a switch to the much smaller Apple plug for charging and playing music from that new iPhone 5, iPod touch or iPod nano. The system will otherwise seem uncannily familiar, right down to its remote control and aux-in jack. The SoundDock III is on sale today for $250; while that's a lower initial price than its 2008-era ancestor, the if-it-ain't-broke design philosophy may face a tough battle when much of the competition has since gone wireless.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? As animated as Quincy Pondexter was on a night when he couldn't miss, it looked as though he wanted the team that traded him away to notice how well he's doing these days.

Pondexter denied it, to which teammate Rudy Gay said, "I don't believe him at all."

Gay tied a season-high with 28 points, Pondexter matched his season-high with 16, and the Memphis Grizzlies maintained their NBA-best winning percentage with their second-straight victory, 96-89 over the struggling New Orleans Hornets on Friday night.

Pondexter hit all six of his shots, including four 3-pointers.

"I didn't look at it as I'm playing against my old team," Pondexter said. "I looked at it as we needed a win and I'm really glad our guys pulled it off tonight. It wasn't I was extra assertive or anything tonight. I was just making the right basketball plays."

New Orleans put up resistance, despite losing for the 11th time in 13 games, and Memphis needed Gay's 3-pointer with 2:10 left to get some breathing room.

"We just toughed it out," Gay said. "This is one of those games that a young team probably wouldn't win, but the fact that we've been around and know how it is, the fact that this is the NBA and everybody has a chance to win, that's what got us over the hump."

Zach Randolph added 15 points and Marc Gasol 13 for the Grizzlies, who improved to 14-3 (.824). Pondexter, the Hornets' first-round draft choice in 2010 who was traded for Greivis Vasquez shortly before last season, appeared to be engaging in a measure of trash talk as he made his way down the court followed each basket.

"He was yapping with them and stuff like that. That's how it is sometimes. Guys find ways to get yourself in rhythm and get yourself pumped up," Gay said. "There's a lot of games. You've got to find whatever you can to get up. It probably does feel good for him to play against them like that, to be able to win and play well."

Ryan Anderson, Austin Rivers and Brian Roberts each scored 15 points for the Hornets, who were within one possession of tying or leading several times in the fourth quarter. Xavier Henry, making his first start this season, had 12 points.

"It's close to the right effort," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "I'm proud of how we competed but my heart aches because you lost a game you had a chance to win.

"That we held a good team to 45 points in the second half says a lot about how our guys competed," Williams added.

Henry started for Al-Farouq Aminu, who did not play at all despite being healthy. Williams did not explain the lineup change in detail other than to say he wants to give chances to those who understand that playing in the NBA is a privilege and who play with passion.

Rivers' point total was a season high for the rookie, drafted 10th overall.

Both teams shot well in a crowd-pleasing contest, with Memphis hitting 50 percent (36 of 72) and New Orleans 48 percent (36 of 75). The Hornets were 8 of 16 from 3-point range and the Grizzlies 8 of 17.

Memphis dominated inside, however, outrebounding New Orleans 46-29 and outscoring the Hornets 46-36 in the paint. The Grizzlies also had 17 second-chance points, thanks in part to 11 offensive rebounds.

New Orleans close to 86-85 when Jason Smith snagged Roberts' lob feed at the front rim and laid it in. Memphis responded with Randolph's inside basket and Gasol's 8-foot turnaround bank shot as he was fouled by Smith. Rivers' one-handed pull-up cut the Grizzlies' lead to 91-87 before Gay drilled his key right win 3 to quiet the New Orleans Arena crowd.

Memphis appeared to be taking control in the last five minutes of the second quarter with a 12-4 run that began with Gay's 3-pointer. Conley and Pondexter also hit from deep, giving the Grizzlies their first double-digit lead at 43-33.

Memphis' lead grew to 14 before Anderson's tip-in cut it to 51-39 at halftime.

New Orleans slowly clawed back in the third quarter, though, closing the period with an 8-2 spurt, featuring 3s by Rivers and Roberts, that cut the Grizzlies' lead to 71-66 and setting up a tense final 12 minutes.

NOTES: Hornets F Anthony Davis, the NBA's top overall draft choice, missed his 10th straight game. New Orleans is 2-8 during that stretch. ... G Tony Allen (right groin strain) started after missing Memphis' previous three games. He finished six points. ... New Orleans, which plays in Miami on Saturday night, closed out its five-game home stand 1-4. ... Gay has scored at least 14 points in every game this season. ... Memphis had its highest overall and 3-point shooting percentages of any half this season, hitting 55.3 percent over all (21 of 38) and 55.6 percent from deep (5 of 9).

Build a better payphone: NYC hosts public design challenge to reinvent public telephones

Build a better payphone New York City hosts public design challenge to reinvent public telephones

New York City's SmartScreen payphone refits may be revitalizing a handful of its 11,000 public kiosks, but the information scrubbing touchscreens lack a key communication feature: a telephone With its existing payphone vender agreements due to expire in 2014, the city sees an opportunity to revitalize its communication infrastructure, and is asking the public to help them build the payphone of tomorrow. There's room for hardware innovation -- the city says most payphone locations can be augmented with fiber connections, opening the potential to expand functionality beyond basic voice calls.

Designers are challenged to propose solutions that enhance local aesthetics, utilize sustainable power sources, combat vandalism, account for emergency scenarios, ensure accessibility to disabled persons and, of course, generate at least as much revenue for the City of New York as contemporary payphones Entrants have until February 18th to submit their prototypes and designs, and 15 semi-finalists will have to face down a panel of judges in March. Want to get started? Check out the project's home page at the adjacent source link, and dig in -- the city is offering resources on payphone locations, WiFi service metrics and a Collabfinder page to help prospective designers find a team.
